Earlier this week I was working with Brian some more on his Book of Kells inspired sleeve. The central parts of all these panels are pulled directly from the manuscript and I’ve filled in the gaps with my understanding of the insular style. I love working with these knots and beasts. It’s literally what got me into all this stuff when I was a kid! I can’t believe it’s been 7 years since I did this design on @annekesagn.. time flies! Within the design you can spy the Warg of Nordic mythology eating the sun, hence the play on the Bronze Age sun cross on Mira’s temple. It’s not completely clear if Fenris and Sköl are the same creature or not, after all most of the gods and minor characters have multiple names known as “kennings” to help aid skalds with poetic flow. You can see on her neck we sketched out how to continue the design, as this tattoo is partly a coverup. Hope you’re keeping well Mira, see you this summer! Music: @wardruna #nordictattoo

Work in progress. Here’s an update on how Brian’s Book of Kells tattoo is going. This was all done in one session yesterday. I’ve included the folio page 34, “Matthew” from the Book of Kells, and also a close up of the section we used for the design. The section is also flipped! After over 1200+ years the velum is quite faded and damaged, but you can see why they call “the work of angels”. #celtictattoo #insularhibernosaxon
