A large dragon torso tattoo for my brother @davies_seb over four sessions. Thankyou for getting such a cool design! In my opinion this is one of the best dragon tattoo designs out there.

I referenced the design from the dragon tattoo on the chest of a Mr De Bathe. The tattoo was originally applied by Sutherland Macdonald; you can see the reference photo (c1905) I used for my version on the third slide.

For any further reading on Sutherland and early 20th century British tattooing, I highly reccomend the book ‘Pioneers of British Tattooing’ published recently by @scottishtattoohistory

Finally finished this painting depicting a man’s back-piece by legendary tattooist George Burchett!

The reference photograph has been kicking about for a while and I’ve always thought the design must have been taken from Japanese Ukiyo-e print. Turns out my hunch was correct and the tattoo was adapted from a playing card that illustrates modern versions of chapters from the ‘Tale of Genji’

The series is titled Murasaki Shikibu Genji karuta (Murasaki Shikibu’s Genji Cards). The scene relates to Chapter 12, ‘Suma’, in which Genji is exiled to the seaside village of Suma. The set was designed by Utagawa Kunisada II in 1857.

A Falcon tattoo for Nick’s back, which I added the shading to yesterday.
We are planning to include a snake around the neck eventually, similarly to the composition on the last slide. There is also an alternate version of this design on a ‘Captain Woodiness’ from the great book ‘Pioneers of British Tattooing Vol.1’

Usually I advocate for my clients to have colour in their tattoos; however for this piece I felt black and grey would be best. Who knows, maybe it’s from seeing these photos in monochrome so often.

It’s been a while! Here’s some of the projects I’ve done or am working on recently

The start of a really interesting project. Craig asked me to listen to a playlist he created and convey it into a half sleeve. Incorporating a couple of healed pieces I’ve already done for him. It was great to take on a new challenge and can’t wait to finish in a couple weeks
