Tim wanted anatomy incorporated with flowers. Since he's in the medical field I did a bit of a deep dive into medical illustrations and 3d models to try and keep things as accurate as I could while still keeping the tattoo dynamic.⁠

I love old movie monsters, so I was excited Junie wanted to do a Frankenstein themed forearm. For a novel that's over 200 years old and was written by an 18 year old, the various ethical themes the novel touches are still intriguing and applicable. Fun fact, the story was written as a friendly competition between Mary and 2 other writers on who could write the best ghost story.⁠

Poseidon is an ever popular subject for tattoos, particularly here by the beach where so many people have an attachment to the ocean. But he is also associated with earthquakes and is also the god of horses. He fathered Pegasus with Medusa (weird) so maybe he's also the god of questionable choices.⁠

Time is a common theme in tattooing. Whether its about time passing, healing, the circle of life and death, or Nick's case the time of his kids births. He wanted to juxtapose roses and nature as feminine and mechanical things elements as the masculine. I didn't think flowy ornamental designs would've worked as well since the other elements were so busy, so we opted for more of a gothic style for the background elements.⁠

Mermaids are fun to tattoo. I've been able to do quite a few recently and @spiralpathcauldron (being a mermaid herself) always gets excited seeing people get them. There's a lot of astrology symbolism for Kali's family in this one.⁠

“In 1887, a year after opening, the Lighthouse Board took over the statue’s operations. They claimed that sailors would be able to see the statue miles out at sea and decided to utilize her as a lighthouse, promising to install better equipment. This proved to be unsuccessful and too costly.”

We snuck in this filler torch on Austin. It was a pretty long and skinny spot we had left between his Lincoln portrait and eagle tattoo. We had to do a little thinking about the space because it felt a little too big to just fill with background. It worked out real well in this case but I usually prefer to have a game-plan for the whole area ahead of time so I can be aware of someone’s future projects.
When we can’t do that I do my best to design in a way that leaves me a few options for tying into new tattoos. Thanks again, Austin!
