They are among some of the first heavenly bodies to be recorded in literature. In Greek Mythology, The Pleiades were first women, daughters of the Titan Atlas. But when they were pursued by the hunter Orion, Zeus turned them into stars to escape. In Native American mythology, the seven sisters were pursued by a bear and climbed atop a low rock to escape. They prayed to the stone, and it grew so high it turned them into stars, the grooved from the bears claws imbedded in the rock forming the Devils Tower in the Black Hills of Wyoming. Many cultures only recognize six of the stars, with the last being so faint it is invisible to the naked eye.
