On Friday February 6th we very suddenly lost one of my best friends in the world, Brian Canipelli. I met Brian close to 18 years ago, shortly after he opened Cucina 24. Through eating in his restaurant and tattooing him, we slowly became closer friends over our shared love for music, art, food, and staying up too late drinking with friends. Eventually we became part of each other’s inner circle. Brian loved to host and entertain for his friends. He was good at bringing a big group of people together on a Sunday afternoon and feeding us until we couldn’t bare another bite. We all became better friends and closer to each other because of that. He was like glue that held us all together. There are a lot of people I would have never known, if it weren’t for his determination to throw a great party. When I think about what life will be without him, I realize just what a big role he has played in mine. I will miss our random lunch dates on Tuesdays. I will miss being able to call him for cooking advice and him walking me through a recipe over the phone. I will miss birthday dinners. I will miss Thanksgiving together with friends. I will miss the late night texts sharing photos of what we were eating on vacation. I’ll miss sending each other our favorite live Grateful Dead shows and other musical interests. I’ll miss traveling to try new restaurants together. I’ll miss sharing an incredible bottle of wine. I’ll miss sitting at the chef’s bar and having you feed us. Most of all I’ll miss when you got us all together and filled the table with beautiful plates of food, and we feasted like kings into the night, laughing and talking shit with each other. I hope through all of this we can be more like Brian. Make time for your friends and family. Don’t get too caught up and let it slip by. I’m so glad he made time for all of us. He leaves behind a hole that can’t be filled, but we can still honor him in different ways every day. Practice restraint, make beautiful things, be humble, put love into whatever it is you do. To know him is to love him. Let his memory live on forever in his food, his family, and his friends.
